The West’s Bloody Hypocrisy in Syria: The Violent and Illegitimate Seizure of Power by a Genocidal Puppet Regime

 By HOS Editors - 28 Aug 2025

The violent and illegitimate seizure of power from Bashar al-Assad’s secular government in December 2024 marked a dark, unlawful chapter in Syria’s tragic history.

Backed overtly and covertly by NATO countries and Israel, and executed through ruthless military force and extremist militias, Abu Mohammad al-Jolani (aka, Ahmad al-Sharaa) implanted as the new ruler. This terrorist leader, groomed and trained by factions linked to MI6 (and other intelligence agencies), now commands a regime responsible for horrific genocides against vulnerable minorities, including the Alawites in March 2025 and Druze massacres in Suweyda.

Illegality and International Law

This violent coup flagrantly violates the basic tenets of international law, including the UN Charter’s guarantee of sovereign non-interference and the right of peoples to self-determination. The regime change in Syria was not the result of a popular uprising or legitimate process, but brute force—an illegal intervention by foreign powers and militant proxies. Failure to hold the architects of this coup and the atrocities to account undermines not only justice for Syria but global norms meant to prevent unlawful regime change and outside aggression.

Dictatorship and Repression

Al-Sharaa’s governance remains firmly dictatorial despite the scheduled parliamentary elections set for September 15 to 20, 2025—the first since the bloody coup. However, this process is widely condemned as a controlled charade meant to concentrate power rather than reflect the will of the people.

Under the new electoral law ratified by al-Sharaa, he will appoint one-third (70 of 210) of the People’s Assembly members directly, consolidating his legislative control. The remaining two-thirds will be chosen through “electoral bodies” formed by local subcommittees appointed by the regime, replacing direct popular voting with a highly managed, indirect system.

Candidacy eligibility is strictly managed, excluding former government supporters, former Syrian Army members, promoters of federalism, or those linked to security services. In short, anyone opposed to their radical Sunni/Takfiri ideology is systematically excluded from representation. This engineered political environment guarantees the absence of genuine opposition.

The interim constitution, ratified in March 2025, grants sweeping presidential powers to al-Sharaa, including appointing ministers, controlling the military and judiciary, and enacting laws based on Islamic sharia without meaningful checks or protections for minorities.

Although rules mandate that women constitute at least 20% of the electoral bodies, and provide representation for displaced people, families of conflict victims, people with disabilities, and detained survivors, these provisions function as mere window dressing. The entire system is designed to manufacture a veneer of democracy, mask authoritarian consolidation, and sell legitimacy to foreign backers.

Critics both inside Syria and internationally denounce these elections as political theater—a farce designed to validate authoritarian rule under the guise of democratic reform. This blatant manipulation is fully known by Western powers but quietly tolerated because al-Sharaa serves geopolitical interests.

Campaign of Terror – Genocide Against Minorities

Since taking control, Al-Jolani's (Ahmad al-Sharaa’s) terrorists forces, now called "general security" forces —dominated by Hay’at Tahrir al-Sham (HTS)—have unleashed a campaign of systematic persecution against the Alawite community, a religious minority historically targeted by extremists. The violence escalated catastrophically in March 2025, when coordinated assaults on at least 56 Alawite villages along Syria’s Mediterranean coast resulted in mass killings, abductions, and forced displacement. HTS fighters and their allies executed men, women, and children based solely on their Alawite identity. Thousands of Alawite males aged 13 and above were separated from their families, subjected to torture, humiliation, and summary execution. Secret prisons run by HTS and their new “General Security Service” became sites of mass disappearances; families remain desperate for news of detained loved ones, with credible reports of killings and unmarked burials.

The Humanitarian Catastrophe

The coup unleashed a humanitarian catastrophe of staggering proportions. Thousands of civilians have been killed or displaced, and millions live under a regime willing to commit gross human rights abuses, including mass executions, ethnic cleansing, and forced disappearances. Waves of refugees continue to flee Lebanon and elsewhere, deepening the region’s humanitarian crisis. Syria’s social fabric is shattered, with devastating effects for future generations.

Media Blackout and Disinformation

Western mainstream media have suppressed honest reporting about the regime’s genocide and repression, opting for selective silence and state-aligned narratives. This media blackout, coupled with active disinformation, distorts the truth and misleads the global public. Independent journalists and activists have risked their lives to expose the regime’s crimes and the West’s complicity, ensuring the world does not forget Syria’s suffering.

International Reaction and Inaction

Leading human rights organizations—including Amnesty International and the UN Commission of Inquiry—have condemned the violence and called for accountability. However, international action has remained limited, as geopolitical interests often prevail over human rights. Calls for investigation and reform are undermined by the continued support for Syria’s new rulers by Western capitals and the lack of meaningful pressure on their backers.

The UN Platform – Symbolic Farce

Adding insult to injury, imposter "Ahmad al-Jolani" has been invited to speak at the United Nations in New York. Granting a global diplomatic platform to a terrorist responsible for genocide and oppression not only legitimizes his regime but also tarnishes the credibility of the UN. It is a grotesque spectacle—a betrayal of international justice and the founding principles of the institution—that signals power and alliances trump justice and principle.

Voices of Syrians

Despite ongoing terror, Syrians have organized peaceful protests, documented abuses, and called for justice and reform. Survivor testimonies and reports from exiled communities continue to reveal the depth of suffering and resilience among ordinary Syrians. “We will not be silent. The world must hear our pain and our hope for a future free of terror and betrayal,” one activist said in a recent interview with Syrian diaspora media.

Conclusion

The cynical replacement of a secular, multi-religious/sect government that defended Palestinian rights with a genocidal puppet regime—one handed a UN platform and applauded by those who caused the catastrophe—reveals the true nature of Western realpolitik. Syrians continue to suffer, as the cost of imperial ambition is masked by propaganda and global indifference.

This ongoing hypocrisy exposes the brutality of interventionism—a tragedy endured by millions, hidden behind diplomacy and manipulated narratives.
