In the Bustan al-Basha area of the Jableh countryside, a mass grave containing the remains of nine Alawite civilians was uncovered on 19 August inside a villa’s sewage pit.
Identity examinations confirmed that all the victims were Alawite and had been massacred by Hay’at Tahrir al-Sham (HTS) and allied groups loyal to Abu Muhammad al-Jolani’s terrorist regime in #Damascus.
The mass grave was discovered in a villa that had been abandoned. Once belonging to a Syrian Army pilot, the property—like many others—fell into the hands of radical factions after al-Jolani’s terrorist-coup in December 2024. Bustan al-Basha and its surroundings got under the control of the Sultan Murad Division, a faction notorious for its role in the massacres and forced displacement of Alawite communities. Known for its brutality and extremist ideology, this group has committed widespread human rights violations across the region.
Today, the nine Alawite martyrs exhumed from the grave were laid to rest in a solemn funeral ceremony.

The discovery of this grave is not an isolated crime but part of a far wider pattern of atrocities committed since al-Jolani and his militants seized power in December 2024. Hundreds of Alawites are believed to have been massacred and dumped in mass graves across the country. Some were thrown into sewers, others into the sea, and many cast from mountaintops, their bodies left to be consumed by wildlife and never recovered.
International investigators must be given access to carry out independent and impartial inquiries into the massacres across Syria. Countless killings and mass graves remain hidden under the rule of al-Jolani’s terrorist regime. Families are often deceived into believing their loved ones are alive in prisons, when in truth they were executed and buried in secret graves by Hay’at Tahrir al-Sham (HTS).
The suffering of the #Alawite community is deep and ongoing. Each newly uncovered grave tears open fresh wounds for families who have already lost so much. Yet every name remembered and every burial performed also speaks to the resilience of a community that refuses to be erased, holding onto dignity and memory in the face of unspeakable cruelty.
